Netflix’s River Dips into 70’s Pop Music

We just finished a binge session of a Netflix series River, a cop drama starring the excellent Stellan Skarsgård and Nicola Walker.
In this six part series, Detective River tries to solve the murder of his partner.

At several points in the drama, the disco song “I Love to Love…” (1976) is used to convey the emotional relationship between River and his partner, Stevie. The song was written by Jack Robinson and James Bolden; Tina Charles was 22 when the song became an international success:#1 in Ireland, #2 in the US.

Using a throwback hit in modern contemporary setting is an intentional anachronism that often results in rekindling a song’s popularity, for example:

Moulin Rouge:Lady Marmalade
A Knight’s Tale: “Golden Years” David Bowie
Guardians of the Galaxy: “Hooked on a Feeling”

You can hear the song below…lyrics if you want to do karaoke (…and you will!)

Oh I love to love
But my baby just loves to dance
He wants to dance, he loves to dance
He’s got to dance
Oh, I love to love
But my baby just loves to dance
Oh, I love to love
But there’s no time for our romance, no, no , noooo
Oh, I love to love
But my baby just loves to dance
