Gift of Christmas #5: José Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad”

So you are sitting frustrated in traffic where there is little evidence of the season’s “goodwill to men” when the radio channel begins playing, “Feliz Navidad” by Jose Feliciano. Suddenly the sounds of guitar strum, horns, and strings fill the car. Feliciano’s clear voice fills the air and you chime in and sing, “Feliz Navidad….Feliz Navidad…”

As you sing the first chorus, “I want to wish you a Merry Christmas…” your arms are pumping like maracas. By the time you sing that same chorus (and it comes around three times), the entire car is rocking.

Who cares about traffic? It’s the Christmas season!!!!

The lyrics are not hard to remember, although I did have a group of 7th grade students who misunderstood the words. I overheard them singing, “The fleas on your dog…”

“Does that even make sense?” I asked, and taught them the very simple lyrics:

Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad
Prospero Ano y Felicidad.

Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad
Prospero Ano y Felicidad.

I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas
I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas
I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas
From the bottom of my heart.

You don’t even need to be caught in traffic to enjoy the song, which is why “Feliz Navidad” is my 5th gift of Christmas….
