It was an Epicurean holiday brunch. We shared stories about our profession (education), articles we read, and books we recommend. We ate great food and toasted with sparkling drinks. We unwrapped the presents on the table. From Angela there were delicious spirits to warm us this winter season. From Cara there was chocolate wrapped in poetry to satisfy our cravings of body and soul. From Trish, however, there was a little literary bling.
Trish is always clever with her gift selections. Last year, she created paper origami star ornaments. Mine was created from a page from Act III scene i Hamlet, “To be or not to be…” speech.
This year, she gave us each a cuff bracelet appropriate for English and Social Studies teachers. Each bracelet was engraved with a quote. There was a quote from The Great Gatsby; there was another by Thomas Jefferson.
My bracelet was engraved with a quote spoken by my favorite character from literature, the Monster from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein:
Beware, for I am Fearless,
and Therefore, Powerful
I went to work today wearing the bracelet, and felt…well, fearless.
A wonderful Christmas gift….Thank you, Trish!
