There was an Advanced Placement Literature Chat #APLITCHAT on Twitter tonight that centered on a survey By Grant Wiggins(Understanding by Design) This survey asked boys what was their “least favorite class.” The majority of boys (secondary school) in this survey said “English!”:
As I wipe a tear from my eye, I repeat what I have said earlier on this topic.
English is not really sequential set of knowledge steps but a weave-a continuous layering of warp and woof. Students are initiated in improving the skills of reading, writing, and speaking in pre-school and continue to develop these skills at each grade level.
Apparently, students are tired of the “same old same old” or they do not appreciate the importance of the skills they learned in the English/Language Arts classroom.
The survey shows that that we have (sadly) exhausted the “woofers”…
